Michał Brzeziński (bio)

Curator, theoretician and one of the most dynamic and recognisable Polish video artists who is inspired by the broadly defined new media. His video art productions, firmly rooted in conceptual and theoretical basis, have been extended to encompass the category of artistic metamedia – social systems which become art generators. His first metamedia work was Galeria NT [NT Gallery] which operated in Łodź in 2010. As a supervisor of the international IN OUT FESTIVAL, he conducted a Parakino Series at “Łaźnia” Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk in the years from 2008 to 2010. Graduated in film studies from the Media and Audiovisual Culture Department at the University of Łodź. MA thesis entitled “Subject, Body, Identity. A Contribution to Cybercultural Anthropology” [2003]. His video works have been presented at all major Polish galleries of contemporary art, mainly as part of programmes by Józef Robakowski and Krzysztof Jurecki. Solo exhibitions of his works have been on view at such galleries as “Bunkier Sztuki” Art Gallery in Cracow, “Wieża Ciśnień” Art Gallery in Konin, “Arsenał” Art Gallery in Białystok, CSW “Łaźnia”, Art Museum in Łódź, Art Exhibition Office in Kielce, Art Exhibition Office in Sanok, and “Platan” Gallery in Budapest. He has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and festivals including two independent presentations during Łódź Biennial 2006 both as a curator and an artist. In 2005, his work titled “PEER GYNT” was shown at A. Rubinstein Philharmonic Hall in Łódź (where E. Grieg’s piece was performed by Lingua Nostra orchestra conducted by Marcin Wolniewski). He participated in the main exhibition of the Biennial of Photography in Poznań in 2008, in INSPIRATIONS Festival in 2008, PRZECIĄG Festival in 2009 and in numerous collective exhibitions on show at such galleries as CSW “Łaźnia”, Manhattan Art Gallery, “Spiż” Art Gallery, Artists’ Colony, Fot Art Los Angeles Center For Digital Art, Museum of Bat Yam, Orensanz Museum – New York, Humboldt (Berlin), FEST I NOVA (Georgia), Kino Šiška (Video In Progress – Lublana). In 2010, a solo exhibition of his works was broadcast for ninety days at VISUALCONTAINER, the only internet television focusing on video art which is watched worldwide. He has been a curator of one-time collective exhibitions or meetings and exhibition series at such venues as Art Exhibition Office in Bydgoszcz, “Arsenał” Art Gallery in Białystok, CSW “Łaźnia”, “Wieża Ciśnień” Art Gallery in Konin, Art Exhibition Office in Sanok or Art Museum in Łódź. Texts devoted to his artistic output have been published in such publications as EXIT, OPCJE, OBIEG and ARTeon. He received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in 2008.
